Bell tower at Hanover Lutheran Church is getting "face lift," after its cypress wood had withstood 24 years of weathering and woodpeckers; workers are applying synthetic stucco material to structure.

The Rev. Lawrence Eatherton, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson, is leaving local pastorate; he has accepted call to serve at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Fenton, Mo.; Eatherton has served St. Paul since August 1982, first as vicar and then as pastor, being ordained and installed in August 1983.

25 years ago: Oct. 24, 1978

Sikeston, Mo. -- Rep. Bill D. Burlison is in satisfactory condition and improving at Missouri Delta Community Hospital, where he is in intensive care after being hospitalized Sunday with heat stroke; he is expected to be moved out of intensive care shortly.

Question of what, when and how, as they relate to construction of multipurpose building at Southeast Missouri State University, will be back before university's Board of Regents tomorrow; regents will receive additional information from committee studying prospects for multipurpose building on campus.

50 years ago: Oct. 24, 1953

Barge traffic has dropped 10 percent as result of low water on Mississippi River; Capt. John Luchow of Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. reports there are quite a few narrow channels south of Cairo, Ill.; so far, U.S. Engineers have kept channel dredged deep enough for tows to pass, but in some places channel is only wide enough for one-way traffic.

Bridge across Randol Creek about three miles west of Jackson collapsed yesterday morning with loaded concrete truck owned by Cape Ready Mix concrete firm; bridge was on first road south of Greensferry Road.

75 years ago: Oct. 24, 1928

Stating position of county court on proposed $75 million bond issue to complete state road system of Missouri -- to be voted on at election Nov. 6 -- Presiding Judge James A. Kinder urges approval of bond issue by voters of Cape Girardeau County; he says adoption of bond issue will mean not only completion of state highways in this county, but construction of farm-to-market roads with state money.

Contract is let to Boren Bros. for construction of new restaurant building at 715 Broadway for J.L. Jones, who has been in business number of years; building, designed by architectural firm of Reither and Lindsay, will have frontage of 20 feet on Broadway and will be 80 feet deep.
