Clarence Comer, deputy U.S. Marshal stationed in Cape Girardeau, has received the highest honor of the Marshal's Service for his action in a hostage crisis involving a postman and an armed felon here; in a ceremony Wednesday in Washington, D.C., Comer was presented the Robert Forsyth Valor Award by U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese.

The Cape Girardeau School Board has approved the formation of a committee to develop a new list of potential budget cuts within the Cape Girardeau public school system.

1962

Girardeans interviewed by The Missourian are unanimous in their belief the nation has embarked on the correct course in its quarantine of Cuba; countering what the Kennedy administration says is the construction of a Soviet base for offensive missiles and weapons on the island, U.S. Navy ships move in to clamp an arms blockade on Cuba.

Calvin Mitchell, an employee of The Missourian, is burned when the furnace he is lighting in The Missourian building explodes; he is treated for shock and second-degree burns of the arms and face at a local hospital.

1937

Democrats, young and old, come to Cape Girardeau for an old-fashioned rally under the sponsorship of the Young Democratic Clubs of America; the event opens with a colorful parade and culminates with an afternoon meeting at Houck Field Stadium; a banquet will be held at the field house tonight, and a public rally will follow at the stadium; among those attending are Julien N. Friant, Secretary of War H.H. Woodring, and senators Bennett C. Clark and Harry S. Truman.

More than 1,000 people visited the new Rueseler Motor Co. Building last night when it was opened to the public.

1912

Twenty residents have signed a contract with the Vawter Chatauqua System for the staging of a Chatauqua here late in July or early in August of next year; the signers guaranteed to see that at least 400 season tickets are sold at $1.50 each.

George V. Mechler and M.D. Loy of the Chaffee Real Estate Co. are in Cape Girardeau on business; they are preparing to place on sale a big lot of Scott County land.
