Benton - Two Sikeston attorneys, both Democrats, are hoping Republican Gov. John Ashcroft will appoint them to fill vacant associate circuit judge position in Scott County; seeking seat formerly held by Lewis M. Blanton, who resigned to become U.S. magistrate, are Fielding Potashnick and David Dolan.

Poplar Bluff - Three Rivers Community College District Board of Trustees Wednesday settled on 70-acre site off Highway 67 near Holiday Inn for construction of permanent campus; land, which is in city limits, was bought by college in 1968 for $51,000.

Scott City - Missouri Municipal League, using study figures on low-income housing needs in Bootheel area, has determined the towns of Illmo, Scott City and Benton havE greatest need for assistance in rejuvenating homes for elderly who are on fixed, low incomes.

50 years ago: Oct. 23, 1951

Street Department employees are raking leaves - out of gutters and sewer openings, where leaves dammed up water from heavy rain last night and this morning; city received 1.63 inches of rain by 9:30 a.m., and forecast is for more rain later today and tomorrow.

Businessmen will spend afternoon "down on the farm" Thursday, when Chamber of Commerce sponsors its annual rural tour; this year, caravan will go to Sedgewickville area, stopping at George Kimbel's new horse barn, at Roy Meier's farm to see his famous Angus herd, at Clyde Whaley's farm with nearly 5,000 turkeys, and at old Bollinger Mill.

75 years ago: Oct. 23, 1926

William H. Lemmel, superintendent of public schools at Caruthersville, is elected president of Southeast Missouri Teachers Association at closing session of annual meeting at Teachers College; without dissenting voice, teachers vote to hold 1927 meeting in Cape Girardeau.

Before crowd estimated at more than 2,000 persons and with real "football weather" prevailing, Central High School and Jackson High clash at Fairground Park in their first gridiron meeting of season; Jackson scores in each of four quarters, while holding Tigers scoreless; final score is Jackson 22, Central 0.
