KENNETT, Mo. -- Farm and economic policies were the main topics of a lively debate last night between Eighth District congressional candidates Bill Emerson and Wayne Cryts; the two will face off again tonight in Cape Girardeau in a debate sponsored by the Missourian newspaper at Concord Theatre.

Stan Popp is surprised to find the front of his building gone, when he arrives for work in the morning at his insurance agency, 67 Plaza Way; his building is the victim of a loaded, runaway Coca Cola truck, which rolls across the Dollar General store parking lot and into Popp's office, tearing down the whole front.

50 years ago: Oct. 22, 1961

Beginning today, and continuing through next Sunday, Dr. James A. Millard Jr., state clerk of the Presbyterian Church, U.S., General Assembly, will conduct a series of evangelical meetings at First Presbyterian Church.

L.H. Strunk, a member of the State College faculty for many years before retiring, has taken a position as supervisor in the study hall at Notre Dame High School.

Construction of a complete elementary school on the Old Lorimier School site on Independence Street is assured with the announcement by the Public Works Administration in Washington that a grant of $59,787 had been released for use in erecting the school; with $85,000 available through bonds voted by the school district at a special election in June, there will be $144,787 to spend on the building.

Rain and cold weather fail to stop the invasion of the largest crowd of teachers ever to attend the annual convention of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association here; part of the draw may be today's lectures by Arctic explorer Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd.

100 years ago: Oct. 22, 1911

Playing in a cold rain on a muddy gridiron yesterday, the Cape Girardeau Normals defeated the visiting Shurtleff College football team of Alton, Ill., 11-0.

Haas Bros., 635 Good Hope St., have announced the reopening of their pool room and box ball alleys under the management of J. Wissman.
