25 years ago: Oct. 22, 1980

CAIRO, Ill. -- The capacity of the Alexander County jail, by federal order, has been reduced from 24 to a maximum of 12 inmates and to six on a long-term basis; that is one result of a consent agreement reached Oct. 15 in a civil rights suit filed in September 1977 over conditions at the county jail.

Bruce Vawter of St. Louis and Eddie Ponder of Perryville, Mo., both foresters with the Missouri Department of Conservation, are making a survey of trees along several streets in Cape Girardeau; in June the Tree Planting Committee of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce asked the city to request the survey, which will be used to determine the species, condition and value of trees in the city.

50 years ago: Oct. 22, 1955

Lynn Twitty, superintendent of schools at Sikeston, Mo., won the endorsement of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association for the post of vice president of the state organization next year, a position that automatically carries with it the presidency in the following year.

Dorothy Quarles Wetrich of Webster Groves, Mo., who served the past year as vice president, is elected president of the State College Alumni Association at the annual homecoming observance.

75 years ago: Oct. 22, 1930

Central High School will play its remaining football games of the 1930 season in Houck Field Stadium; an agreement for the use of the $200,000 field of the Teachers College for the Tigers' gridiron schedule and for the use of Houck Field House for basketball games during the winter was reached at a conference yesterday between committees representing the two schools; terms of the agreement weren't made public.

An agreement for the improvement of water and street-lighting service in Cape Girardeau, including a provision for the immediate erection of a $232,000 water plant and the building of a modern street-lighting system, is reached between the city council and representatives of Missouri Utilities Co.

100 years ago: Oct. 22, 1905

Some scoundrel stole Vince Chapman's automobile last night; he and his wife took their baby in the vehicle to the Broadway Mercantile Co.; in a short time it was missing.

J.W. Barree, a well-known Frisco brakeman who lives in Cape Girardeau, is brought home from Wilson, Mo., where he was painfully injured in a wreck last evening.
