1987

Agreement by city and state officials on funding has paved the way for improvements to be made to the Kingshighway-Independence Street intersection; the City Council has agreed to finance 75 percent of the cost of the intersection-widening project from the city's allocation of Federal Aid Urban funds; the state will pay the remaining 25 percent of the cost.

Jackson voters will have an opportunity Nov. 3 to do away with the unpopular city vehicle stickers; on that day, a transportation sales tax proposition will be decided; if approved, city aldermen have arranged to drop the vehicle stickers; the one-half-cent-on-the-dollar tax would raise an estimated $350,000 annually for the city.

1962

A stream of color in the form of 36 high school bands and 13 major floats flows along Main Street and Broadway in the morning as the climax to pre-game festivities of the 1962 State College Homecoming; Sue Leach, a junior from Poplar Bluff, Mo., has a place of honor in the parade as Homecoming queen.

The State College football Indians trounce the visiting Springfield, Mo., Bears 21-0 in their annual Homecoming game; some 8,000 fans see the game at Houck Stadium.

1937

Removal of Troop E headquarters of the State Highway Patrol to a point on Highway 67, 4 1/2 miles southwest of Poplar Bluff, Mo., with the headquarters to include the troop's new short-wave radio station soon to be erected, has been agreed upon; however, an office will be maintained at Sikeston, Mo., headquarters of Troop E since the origin of the Patrol.

A controversy over a beer establishment across the road from the Hooe School in Scott County has resulted in the closing of the school nearly two weeks; today, both the beer vending place and the school are closed; the school, with 40 pupils, is on the Base Line Road, four miles north of Vanduser, Mo.; the 3.2 percent beer license of the establishment has been suspended by the state.

Blomeyer, a small village down in the south end of the county on the Frisco line, already boasts the best country school house in Cape Girardeau County; soon it will have a Methodist church, which is being constructed by people of all denominations who reside there.

The weather was ideal yesterday for football, as the Normal School Indians defeated Shurtleff College of Alton, Ill., in their first game of the season, 6-0.
