CAIRO, Ill. -- Sen. Barry Goldwater, Republican candidate for president, launches a whistle-stop tour through Illinois by calling for an end to the military draft and a reduction of what he calls "oppressive federal controls" of agriculture; Goldwater appears at a football stadium here before about 2,000 people and then addresses a crowd of about 5,000 from the rear of his train at Carbondale, Illinois.

Gustav B. Margraf, 48, of Richmond, Virginia, and formerly of Cape Girardeau, has been given an important overseas assignment by the Reynolds Metals Co.; he will move to England to help direct British Aluminum's overseas operations.

1939

Most communities in Cape Girardeau County and several in Bollinger County were represented yesterday, when the new $40,000 bridge over the Little River Diversion Channel, southwest of Whitewater, was dedicated; the 1,000 people attending heard a program which included a half-dozen speakers and music furnished by the Cape Girardeau and Jackson municipal bands.

John Sciortino winds up 29 years of business in Cape Girardeau, selling his fruit and grocery store at 612 Good Hope St., to Mrs. Lester Rhodes and son, Lester Rhodes Jr.

1914

The crowds at the fairgrounds are considerably larger than yesterday; the country and farm folk from Jackson, Gordonville, Oak Ridge and other county towns are rolling in to eat fair food and witness fair events.

The torpedo boat Somers arrived at Cape Girardeau yesterday morning and will remain here until tomorrow morning; in order to bring the ship up the river, it was stripped of its guns and for this reason presents a poor appearance.
