The parade of taxpayers to the city and county collectors' windows has begun in earnest once more, but the peak of the revenue season isn't expected until December; collection of current taxes through September has reached $74,803 for the city, while the county receipts through September amounted to $213,694.

For many areas of Cape Girardeau County, no good rains have fallen in more than a month, and conditions countywide are getting dry; with extra-good crops already made, however, about the only farmers complaining are those anxious to get fall crops sown.

The St. Paul Lutheran congregation extends a call to the Rev. W. Keisker of Trinity Church at Flat River, Mo.; he is to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Rev. W.G. Langehennig, who has held the pastorate of St. Paul for more than 40 years.

Singers from Maple Avenue Methodist Church, known as the Fireside Quartet, give a half-hour musical program in the evening at the Methodist church at Chaffee, Mo.; performers are Mrs. Doyle Gaither, Mrs. E.G. Moore, Mrs. Oscar Ward, Lee Slagle and Lester Lorberg.

1913

The Gem, Jackson's movie theater, has been sold to George Hunter and A.F. Perry by Fred Clippard, who owned the show since the building it is in on High Street was constructed; Hunter also bought an interest in the Perry pool room, and the pool hall and moving picture theater will be run together under the firm name of Perry and Hunter.

Mrs. Julia Allen Block, years ago a resident of Cape Girardeau and a sister of Mrs. R.L. Wilson of upper Broadway, is here visiting her sister and other relatives; she is accompanied by her daughter, Allene, who is now grown to girlhood and charming all with her many accomplishments.
