25 years ago: Oct. 2, 1984

The Southeast Missouri State University Foundation authorizes creation of two $100,000 endowments for "distinguished professorships" in the College of Business and Public Administration.

A state Medical Facilities Review Committee takes the unprecedented action of directing Cape Girardeau's two hospitals to submit an application for a joint venture on a piece of diagnostic equipment both hospitals are seeking; both Saint Francis Medical Center and Southeast Missouri Hospital wish to install a magnetic nuclear resonance device that would cost about $3 million.

50 years ago: Oct. 2, 1959

Master Masons from Southeast Missouri attend a program in the evening at the Arena Building honoring Harold O. Grauel, who on Wednesday was installed grand master of the Grand Lodge of Missouri.

A 1765 map of the course of the Mississippi River has been received by the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce; it was a gift from Will Vance of Redlands, Calif., and shows the Mississippi from Fort Chartres to the Gulf of Mexico.

75 years ago: Oct. 2, 1934

The Forcum-James Co., contractor for rebuilding a section of Little River Drainage District setback levee east of U.S. 61 south of Cape Girardeau, is getting equipment to the site; an office and a commissary are being built near Highway 61, on the Cape Girardeau-Scott County road; tents to house employees, too, are being erected.

Marking its 30th anniversary, The Southeast Missourian publishes a special, six-section edition, featuring numerous articles and historic photos.

100 years ago: Oct. 2, 1909

Business is certainly booming at the fairgrounds these days as preparation goes into high gear for the annual exposition; yesterday a number of attractions arrived and began setting up tents; quite a few fast horses are here for the races; a wonderful racing ostrich is expected to be here tomorrow or Monday morning.

William Cambron and his wife have again taken charge of the Green Tree Hotel in Haarig, and have signed a long-term lease.
