25 years ago: Oct. 19, 1985

Cape Girardeau WISER Inc., the not-for-profit governing board for women's and children's residential services such as the Women's Center and Safe House, Respite Care (emergency child abuse shelter) and Family Residential Treatment Services, has acquired the 19th century home at 235 Merriwether St.; the house will be renovated to provide additional space for WISER's residential service.

Classy Glass, owned and operated by Linda Collins and Mary Koenig, has moved from 223 Independence St., to a space in the Medical Arts building on Broadway; Classy Glass retails a wide range of art glass.

50 years ago: Oct. 19, 1960

Sister M. Barbara, Saint Francis Hospital's new administrator, arrives in Cape Girardeau; she won't assume her new duties, however, until she is formally installed by U.S. Provincial Mother M. Fidelis of the Order of Franciscan Sisters, which runs the hospital.

At least 100 party members from Cape Girardeau County will be in Sikeston, Mo., tomorrow for the Bootheel Democratic Club rally, which is expected to attract 1,500 members to hear former president Harry S. Truman and the party's candidates for state office.

75 years ago: Oct. 19, 1935

A downtown parade in the evening opens the two-day uniform rank encampment of the Woodmen of the World of Missouri and Illinois in Cape Girardeau; the Woodmen are encamped in Fairground Park.

The State College Indians trounced the Arkansas College Panthers of Batesville, 32-0, yesterday in the annual homecoming game at Houck Field Stadium before a crowd of 1,877 alumni.

100 years ago: Oct. 19, 1910

The work of erecting the memorial statue fountain in the courthouse square is progressing; F.J. Page has the big concrete basin finished and today is installing the iron coping; the statue is expected to arrive shortly.

For more than a week, the fogs along the river have been unusually dense, causing much delay to river traffic; none of the boats have been able to make their schedules, as they have had to tie up nights.
