Lewis M. Blanton of Benton was sworn in yesterday as U.S. Magistrate for Eastern District of Missouri during ceremony in Federal Building in Cape Girardeau; Blanton had been Scott County associate circuit judge since 1979.

Big crowd turned out last night to welcome Golden Troopers back to Cape Girardeau from nation American Legion convention and drum and bugle corps contest at Miami, Fla.

Former Gov. Ellis Arnall of Georgia tells capacity crowd of 1,500 Southeast Missouri teachers in College Auditorium in monring America needs "an active faith in popular governmnt and public justice - if we are to promote them throughout the world"; calling for strong military establishment and firm stand in Korea, Arnall says our domestic policy must be based on same principle as our foreign policy - freedom of the individual.

75 years ago: Oct. 19, 1926

D.A. Belden, president of Community Power and Light Co., which controls Missouri Utilities Co., is in Cape Girardeau on tour of inspection of utilities' holdings in this district; he is accompanied by E.S. Billings, chief engineer for company, and I.R. Kelso, its counsel.

Newly organized Optimist Club in Cape Girardeau will receive its charter at banquet at Terminal Cafe Thursday evening; charter will be formally presented to club by Harlington Wood of Springfield, Ill., district governor Optimists; principal address on "Optimism" will be made by the Rev.
