METROPOLIS, Ill. -- Beside the banks of the placid Ohio River, chapters of American history are transformed from textbooks to action as hundreds of 18th century militia men post the colors to open the 14th annual Fort Massac Encampment; the two-day event is designed to recreate the Illinois Territory of the late 1700s.

An appeal for a state fund for the rehabilitation and maintenance of Old Bethel Church site will be made next week when the General Association of Missouri Baptists meets in Mexico, Mo.; making the appeal will be Dr. H.H. Thomas G. Harris of Harris Motor Car Co., has purchased the List residence at 234 Broadway, which adjoins the Harris Motor building on the west; Harris says he will raze the old house, built in 1888, and construct a new building in its place.
B.B. Cahoon of Fredericktown, Mo., speaks at Common Pleas Courthouse in the evening for Wilson, Russell, and the entire Democratic ticket; Cahoon formerly was very active in Republican politics and at one time was the Republican candidate for Missouri governor.
A new grocery store is preparing to open in the Woods building on South Frederick Street this week; proprietors will be W.H. Hollenhour and Sons.
