State College's basketball team embarks on a new era, as coach Charles Parsley prepares for a team without Carl Ritter and Bill Giessing for the first time since the 1958-1959 campaign; 45 athletes show up for the initial practice, including five lettermen from last season and one from 1961.

Fred E. Steck, Scott County prosecuting attorney, announces he will seek the Democratic nomination for state senator in the enlarged 27th District; the seat is now held by Sen. Albert J. Spradling Jr. of Cape Girardeau.

1938

Attended by the largest crowd in history, the 31st Farmers Institute at Oak Ridge goes into its second and final day; the first-day events were climaxed last night with the saddle and harness horse show, attended by 1,208 people; a later crowd was estimated at 1,800.

Russell Bros. Circus arrives in Cape Girardeau and sets up at Fairground Park early in the morning; the three-ring show includes a menagerie of elephants, lions, zebras, chimpanzees and camels.

1913

A mass meeting was held at the courthouse last night to discuss plans to improve Cape Girardeau's public schools; in compliance with the petitions asking it to call a special election for the issuing of $125,000 in bonds for the building of two new schools and enlarging Lincoln School, the board set Nov. 4 as the election date.

Unless the weather prevents or something turns up before Sunday to stop it, the Cardinals will come here from St. Louis that afternoon to play baseball with the Capahas at the fairgrounds; some of the Cardinal players have agreed to come and are trying to round up enough players to field a team.
