Kenneth Cruse, who resigned last week, returns to the police department as chief, while two other officers, previously relieved of their duties, are reinstated; those officers are Marshall F. Morton, who while a captain when discharged returns as a sergeant, and Robert Stallings, a patrolman.
A jam-packed crowd in State College auditorium hears Dr. William M. McGovern, professor of political science at Northwestern University, discuss the needs of the American educational system.
75 years ago: Oct. 14, 1929
Lt. Col. F.B. Whilby, in charge of federal flood work on the Mississippi River between Memphis and Vicksburg, with his wife and Maj. and Mrs. L.D. Worsham, flies into Cape Girardeau from Memphis, landing their amphibian plane on the Mississippi River at the Independence Street wharf; Col. Whilby is here to attend federal court.
The palatial river steamer Island Queen of the Coney Island Line, which had been stranded on rocks in the Mississippi River north of Commerce, Mo., since Wednesday, was repaired and removed from the rocks yesterday afternoon; the boat immediately went to Mounds, Ill., for a complete overhaul.
100 years ago: Oct. 14, 1904
Two 19-year-old Bollinger County boys, who came to Cape Girardeau to attend the fair, are sorry they ever came; both were arrested last night by local police, after they had been aimlessly shooting near Planter's Mill, at Main and Independence.
M.C. Edwards, a contractor of DeSota, Mo., is building two houses for T.P. Russell, on Sprigg and North streets; it is probable that Edwards will locate in Cape Girardeau permanently.
