Cape Girardeau County Presiding Judge Gene Huckstep was scheduled to be aboard Air Illinois Flight 710, the plane on which 10 people died when it crashed near Pinkneyville, Ill., Tuesday night; however, Huckstep changed flights that afternoon and took a TWI flight to St. Louis from Chicago to avoid a layover.
Local architect Ted Hoerner, president of the Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau, is concerned the old shoe factory on North Main Street may face demolition next year, when Florsheim Shoe Co. moves into the former Superior Electric building.
50 years ago: Oct. 13, 1958
Formal opening of the new National Food Market, Cape Girardeau's latest supermarket, at Sprigg and Williams streets, will be held tomorrow morning; a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be followed by talks by Sen. A.M. Spradling Jr. and several company representatives.
The largest budget in Cape Girardeau history, anticipating expenditure totaling $699,725.52 in all funds, is adopted by the city council; the record-breaking budget is $6,502.97 greater than the previous budget.
75 years ago: Oct. 13, 1933
Increased freight rates on coal from Southern Illinois and Kentucky fields to most points in Southeast Missouri will go into effect next Thursday in compliance with an order issued by the Interstate Commerce Commission; however, Cape Girardeau and its immediate territory, including Illmo, Fornfelt, Chaffee and Delta, aren't included in the higher rates.
An unconfirmed report is Missouri State Trooper Percy Little, formerly of Cape Girardeau and now stationed at Rolla, has asked for a transfer here, to succeed Trooper Charles E. Pearson.
100 years ago: Oct. 13, 1908
August Ude, who came to Jackson for Homecomers, extends his visit to New Wells, which was his old home for 37 years; he operated the store and post office there; later, he ran for county treasurer and served two terms.
The big ditch digger on the sewer system is now at work on the Broadway hill, opening up ground for the laying of an 8-inch pipe from the new Republican Building down to the river.
