Republican congressional hopeful Bill Emerson defends his relationship with TRW Inc., and charges U.S. Rep. Bill D. Burlison with using "a tactic of innuendo" by implying there is something improper between TRW and himself; Emerson says he was director of federal relations and a registered lobbyist for TRW from November 1975 to Nov. 15, 1979, when he resigned to return to the 10th District to run for Congress.
The trial site in the Westborough Mall multi-million dollar lawsuit against the city of Cape Girardeau and the developers of West Park Mall has been moved from U.S. District Court in St. Louis to the federal courthouse in Cape Girardeau.
All but two small parcels of ground, neither of which is needed to complete the project, have been placed under option or are available for option for the 3,000-acre state park proposed in the river hills of Cape Girardeau County.
While here yesterday, J.H. McLane of Piedmont, Mo., announced that the date of Feb. 1 has been set for the opening of the supermarket Ward's Big Star at Broadway and Kingshighway; the building is under construction with Burton J. Gerhardt as contractor and Harold Long as architect.
Cape Girardeau's Service Company of the Missouri National Guard, mobilized at noon with orders to go to Ste. Genevieve, Mo., where it was feared a riot was imminent, is disbanded later in the day; other detachments are in the town, the scene of a holdup and slaying yesterday.
Construction of the stone walls for the annex to the auditorium of Academic Hall at the Teachers College has begun; stone is being removed from the rear wall of the big auditorium and used in constructing the three-story annex to the building, which will house a concert-size stage with dressing room facilities and entrance for stage properties.
This is Cape Girardeau Day at the fair; by agreement, the stores close at noon, and big crowds gather throughout the day at the fairgrounds; activities of the day include horse racing and a concert by the talented Doe Run Band, directed by Dr. J.B. Graves.
Before a large crowd at the Broadway Bowling alleys, which are managed by the genial William Oberheide, the strong team from Doe Run, Mo., which came here to attend the fair, defeats the home club in straight games.
