As an inducement for friendly annexation, the city of Jackson is offering to pay for construction next year of a sewer system and water lines to properties west of the Interstate 55-U.S. 61 intersection.

An unidentified woman robs the First Financial Bank of Scott County in Scott City late in the morning, taking an undisclosed amount of cash at gunpoint.

1964

Requests for action on a number of drainage, harbor and flood control matters in this area are made in the morning to members of the Mississippi River Commission, which begins its low-water inspection of the river with a public hearing aboard the motor vessel Mississippi.

A Poplar Bluff, Missouri, woman won the first Cape Girardeau Pilot's Club pilot proficiency air race Saturday at the municipal airport; taking the honors was Mrs. George Blaich, assisted by her husband as co-pilot.

1939

Mayor Edward L. Drum says the city council will soon entertain a proposal to establish a street motorbus system in Cape Girardeau.

Florian Schott, 74, of Oran, Missouri, on Wednesday renounced his allegiance to his homeland of Alsace-Lorraine and took the oath of citizenship in federal court here; Schott said he came to America nearly a half century ago.

Henry, the 11-year-old son of William Wessell, living near Gordonville, fell from a tree yesterday afternoon, breaking both legs, one below the knee and the other just above.

Cape Girardeau County loses one of its most useful citizens with the death of Robert M. Sawyer at Cape Girardeau; Sawyer was born near Fruitland in December 1854, the son of Judge John J. and Nancy M. Templeton Sawyer; he married the former Martha E. Wallace in 1878 and for a time they farmed near his old home; he was admitted to the bar in 1893, moving to Jackson to reside; his removal to Cape Girardeau was a recent occurrence, to allow him to be near his physician.
