WASHINGTON -- Rep. Bill Emerson has turned down an offer for a quick settlement of the dispute over how much land to include in Southeast Missouri's Irish Wilderness, and the issue appears headed for a House-Senate negotiating committee.
A task force charged with an in-depth examination of Cape Girardeau's public school program -- and specifically its high school program -- meets for the first time; the group of 28 teachers, administrators and school patrons will look at content, expectations, the use of time, findings about teachers, and leadership and financial support as they relate to the school district.

Mission Sunday brings the Rev. Louis Dorn of St. Louis to Trinity Lutheran Church to speak; Dorn and his family have been missionaries in the Philippines the past five years.
For the first time since 1955, the Jackson High Indians battled from behind Friday night to squeeze past the Central High Tigers 26-20 for a football victory at Jackson; an estimated 3,000 gridiron fans witnessed the Indians' two halfbacks -- Bob Mitchell and Irvin Eulinberg -- lead the Indians to their first conference victory of the season.
75 years ago: Oct. 12, 1933
Up to the present term of federal court in Cape Girardeau, the government has paid $1,407,000 to owners of Mississippi and New Madrid counties land concerned in the Missouri floodway along the Mississippi River.
The front part of a building at 24 N. Main St., now occupied by the office of Johnston Cleaning Co., is being remodeled and will be used for a drugstore operated by Mrs. Thomas Davis; a new front is being installed on the building; the cleaning company will use a part of the front of the building as an office and retain the rear part for its shop.
100 years ago: Oct. 12, 1908
The Normal School fell 45-0 to the giant St. Louis University football team Saturday at St. Louis; the score isn't as bad as it might be considered at first thought; last year, the score was nearly 60-0.
Delia Kimmel has returned from an extended visit to Mrs. L.E. Sleeper in Ottumwa, Iowa; Mrs. Sleeper is the former Miss Juden of Cape Girardeau.
