Police chief Ray Johnson may be elevated to a new position of public safety director under a plan being considered by Cape Girardeau city officials to reorganize the police and fire departments; under the plan, Johnson would serve as administrator over both departments.

Children's Bazaar ... Again, a clothing consignment shop, is being opened by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wilferth at 114 N. Main St., a location soon to be relinquished by The Lemon Tree, which is moving to West Park Mall.

50 years ago: Oct. 11, 1960

Copies of the orders of the State Banking Board authorizing transfer of the Bank of Gordonville to Cape Girardeau and denying the application of the proposed Bank of Cape Girardeau have been received here; the Gordonville bank will be renamed Cape State Bank.

Eighteen high school bands of the north division of the Southeast Missouri Marching Band Association, stage a spectacular night performance in the Jackson High School stadium, as 1,100 musicians salute their guests, the Arkansas State College Band of Jonesboro.

75 years ago: Oct. 11, 1935

Capt. and Mrs. E.R. Orchard, corps officers of the Salvation Army, are notified by Midland Division headquarters in St. Louis they are to be transferred to Springfield, Mo.; succeeding them will be Capt. Adjt. and Mrs. Malcolm Keene.

Farm men, women and children gather at Oak Ridge, one of the county's oldest communities, for the 28th annual Farmers' Institute; drawing favorable comments are agricultural, poultry, home economics and school exhibits.

100 years ago: Oct. 11, 1910

W.H. Miller, the most distinguished member of the local bar, is given what is believed to be an unprecedented honor; both Republican and Democratic members of the bar endorse him unanimously as a candidate to succeed the late James D. Fox as a member of the Missouri Supreme Court.

After various delays, the paving of Broadway has once more been started; vitrified bricks are being put down on the block between Middle and Frederick streets.
