Around 200 people are attending the two-day Regional York Rite Festival, being held at the Masonic Hall, 128 N. Spanish St.; about half that number are from out of town.

A large concrete culvert that will enable the widening and paving of Clark Avenue and that is expected to ease a flood situation in the area is nearing completion under a $35,000 contract to Superior Concretors; the 776-foot culvert extends along the west side of Clark to its junction with Bessie Street, beginning at the point where an open ditch joins Clark after angling across vacant property from Broadway.

1939

Two Jackson dentists have something to chew over; burglars over the weekend entered the offices of Dr. D.L. Mowery and Dr. T.E. Wilson and made off with about $45 in gold and a half-dozen plates of "store teeth"; the dentists are working feverishly to replace the stolen dentures for their patients.

Retail merchants, meeting at the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce building in the evening, agree to recommend a license tax of 75 cent on the $1,000 gross sales above $10,000 to the city.

1914

Ike Caldwell and Sam Sherman, proprietors of the Caldwell-Sherman clothing store on Main Street, begin the work of trying to salvage stock and fixtures from their burned store building; an examination of the building indicates it will have to be torn down, with the possible exception of the exterior walls.

The man who is painting the Trinity Lutheran Church tower gives an exhibition of "daredevil" bravery during the noon hour; after repairing the gold ball atop the spire, he stood straight up on the top of the tower, holding up the hands which point the directions.
