Bob Crader is up to his neck in old truck tires; Crader, who operates a tire retreading and recapping service, has hundreds of tires which would in the past be dumped at the Cape Girardeau city landfill; but the city's new policy prohibits dumping of tires and brush in the landfill.
CAIRO, Ill. — Cairo public school teachers, who returned to work for the Regional Teachers Meeting last Friday and are off for Columbus Day today, plan to resume their strike against the school district tomorrow.
50 years ago: Oct. 10, 1958
A solemn requiem Mass in memory of Pope Pius XII, who died Thursday, will be celebrated Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral; Monsignor Marion F. Forst, pastor, will be the main celebrant; a requiem Mass will be held the same day at St. Vincent's Church, with the Rev. Joseph P. Dyra, C.M., presiding.
Bids for Cape Girardeau's latest school building, a modern classroom and allied educational structure modified from plans of the new Jefferson School, will be received Oct. 30.
75 years ago: Oct. 10, 1933
As the federal government prepares to launch the virtual rebuilding of the Mississippi River levee along the entire Scott County front, it is learned that Commerce, Mo., its upper terminus, will be left unprotected; the strengthened levee, 25 miles in length, will start south of Commerce.
A special school election will be held Nov. 15 in Cape Girardeau, to ballot on a proposed $130,000 bond issue to provide funds to build two new schools and an annex to Washington School.
100 years ago: Oct. 10, 1908
After a conversation with the secretary of the St. Louis Browns last evening, local fans are inspired with great hope that a game will be the outcome next Saturday; the secretary said the team will come to Cape Girardeau, if proper arrangements can be made in the way of emoluments for the barnstormers; even that phenomenal pitcher, G. Edward Waddell, may be brought along to pitch against the Capahas.
This is proving to be a big day at the fair; hundreds of people from the country, and many from adjoining counties, are at the fairgrounds for the closing day.
