The first major step in establishing a National Public Radio station at Southeast Missouri State University was taken recently when Susan Westfall was hired as station manager.

1963

Plans are advancing for the construction of a new Assembly of God Church at Jackson; according to the Rev. C.J. Upchurch, the building will be on Highway 72 at the corner where Dallas Street would enter the highway if it were open; Upchurch moved to Jackson recently to establish the church.

Congress has been charged by Rep. Paul C. Jones of Kennett, Mo., with failure to face its fiscal responsibilities if it doesn't levy and collect sufficient taxes to meet current obligations; speaking from the floor during a recent House debate on the tax cut, Jones said he is opposed to any reduction that doesn't at the same time carry with it a corresponding reduction in federal spending.

E.W. Hirsch is Cape Girardeau's new chief of police, succeeding Charles A. Schweer, who had headed the department a year; Hirsch, who formerly was chief under Mayor E.L. Drum from July 21, 1934, to April 1936, was elevated from the rank of motorcycle officer.

The newly completed statuary group at the tomb of the Rev. Eberhard Pruente, who led St. Mary's Catholic congregation for more than 50 years, has been placed in St. Mary's Cemetery on Perry Avenue; the tomb faces east toward the entrance of the cemetery.

E.W. Flentge was elected president of the board of directors of the Southeast Savings and Loan Association on Monday night, succeeding D.H.L. Cunningham; other officers chosen were W.E. Vogel, vice president, and George E. Chappell, secretary-treasurer.

Coincident with the assembly of good road advocates here yesterday, a convention of small and large grasshoppers, of mixed hues and various species, was blown in from the fields of Southern Illinois; most landed downtown along Main Street and have remained ever since.
