Donations and pledges made to Southeast Missouri State University through the University Foundation in 1985-86 totaled more than $1.2 million, the most ever in the university fund-raising arm's three years of existence.

Joined by two members of the Missouri House of Representatives -- Norwood Creason and Bob Ward -- Thomas M. Meyer releases his third "Blueprint for Progress" which he stresses offers fresh solutions to the problem of how to build a finer economic future for Cape Girardeau; Meyer is the Democratic candidate for state representative in the 159th District.

50 years ago: Oct. 1, 1961

Fifteen priests of the Redemptorist Order at Liguori, Mo., will be in charge of preaching and instructing for an area-wide Catholic mission, or revival, which will be conducted simultaneously in 13 Catholic churches in October; both St. Mary's and St. Vincent's parishes here will participate.

A new, bigger natural gas pipeline in Cape Girardeau, expected to meet the city's anticipated needs for many years, is being laid by Cape Construction Co., for Missouri Utilities Co.; the 9 1/10 miles of 10-inch pipe will be ready to carry gas Oct. 10, in time for the heating system; traveling along Highway 61 from the Texas Eastern Transmitting Co. line tap at Illmo, the new pipe will enter Cape Girardeau on its fast-growing western edge.

75 years ago: Oct. 1, 1936

Fifty young men from Cape Girardeau County will be enrolled here Wednesday morning for Civilian Conservation Corps service and will be dressed in for preliminary work at the camp in Perryville, Mo.

There is a distinct scarcity of teachers -- particularly those who can teach music, can teach both music and English, or the combination of English, music and the social sciences; State College dean Vest C. Myers is attempting to fill a part of the demand, but he now has on his desk dozens of requests from high school superintendents over the state for teachers for this work.

100 years ago: Oct. 1, 1911

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wielputz, Fornfelt's town baker, have returned from a five-month trip to Germany, during which they visited Mr. Wielputz's old home and several other places in the fatherland; the couple received a hearty welcome by a large number of Fornfelt, Illmo and Edna residents upon their return last week.

The Rev. George Meyer of Egypt Mills, who had a call to Washington, Mo., has decided to remain with his present Lutheran congregation.
