A Japanese manufacturer of agricultural feed grain additives has announced that it will establish its first U.S. facility in Cape Girardeau; a ground-breaking ceremony for Kyowa Hakka Kogyo Co. Ltd's. plant on Nash Road will be Oct. 14.

National Democratic leadership was portrayed yesterday by Vice President George Bush as being out of ideas for solving the country's problems and of resorting instead to personal attacks on President Reagan; Bush, here to boost the re-election campaign of Republican Rep. Bill Emerson, addressed about 500 persons at a $50-a-plate luncheon.

50 years ago: Oct. 1, 1957

Problems of expanding enrollment, particularly at Central High School, were outlined last night to school board members by Superintendent L.J. Schultz; and in companion action, there was discussion of problems which have arisen at new Jefferson School, due to be completed today under the contract, yet at least a month away from being finished.

Officials with the Frisco Railroad are contemplating razing the present passenger depot on South Main Street after a combined passenger and freight depot is built on the site of the old freight depot.

75 years ago: Oct. 1, 1932

Location of the projected farm-to-market road from Cape Girardeau to Neelys Landing has been recommended by the division office of the State Highway Department; if landowners object to the location, they must advise the division engineer at Sikeston, Mo., before Oct. 13.

Brickwork on the new, three-story annex to the Roth Tobacco Co. factory, 102 S. Frederick St., is completed; workers are now finishing the interior, and plasterers have started their work.

100 years ago: Oct. 1, 1907

A movement is started that may result in getting a look at President Roosevelt, when he passes Cape Girardeau Thursday morning between 5 and 6 on the steamer Grey Eagle; Mayor W.C. Patton and Commercial Club President L.J. Albert Jr. plan to send a telegram to the president, asking him to appear on the deck when the boat passes the city.

The Southern Mercantile Co.'s stock of clothing and ladies' ready-made wear, located in Bahn Bros.' building, was removed Saturday by creditors.
