50 years ago: Oct. 1, 1954

The Southeast Missourian is announced as 1954 winner of newspaper community service award presented annually through Inland Daily Press Association by University of Missouri School of Journalism; award notes newspaper's 50-year efforts for diversified agriculture, preservation of landmarks, better rural homes and churches, better highways and bridges, modern street lighting, better utilities, adequate fire protection and other community campaigns.

In past 18 months, Cape Girardeau residents and those in immediate area have contributed $953,210 to three separate building funds: $308,000 for new Catholic high school, $465,210 for addition to Southeast Missouri Hospital and $180,000 for new Trinity Lutheran School.

75 years ago: Oct. 1, 1929

Sparks Circus brought a record crowd of Girardeans and people from the area to the big lot at West Broadway and Perry Avenue yesterday afternoon and evening.

Bad luck continues to dog the heels of the Teachers College Indians; within the past two days, the squad lost three more players to injuries.
