1988

Instead of traveling around the world in 80 days, Albert and Peggy Spradling of Cape Girardeau took just 23 days to circle the globe; they were among 94 persons who took a historic first trip of the French Concorde around the world; they traveled 32,000 miles in those 23 days and visited seven countries.

R. Todd McBride, a Cape Girardeau real estate developer and contractor, says he will seek the office of Cape Girardeau County treasurer.

1963

A new high voltage line will be switched into the Missouri Utilities Co.'s electrical system here, bringing added reliability and "almost unlimited capacity" to Cape Girardeau power service; the switchover of the 161,000-volt Union Electric Co. line from Joppa, Ill., is expected to be accomplished Jan. 14 at the viaduct sub-station south of the city.

New pledges to buy stock in the Greater Cape Girardeau Industrial Development Corp. have boosted the overall total for the drive to $90,140.

1938

College Day is observed at Centenary Methodist Church; all Methodist students attending the State Teachers College are welcomed at Sunday school classes and church services.

Lura Aspinwall, national director of student work for the Christian Church at Indianapolis, Ind., is the guest speaker at services at the Christian Church; her topic is "Let No One Despise Thy Youth."

1913

The superintendent and other officials, and the clerical force of 25 or 30 clerks under them, of the Illinois division of the Iron Mountain Railroad have been moved to Illmo from Chester, Ill.; it is believed that the Iron Mountain will build a round house and repair shops at Illmo soon.

Dies, Mrs. Louisa Lohlkamp Bartels, 72, wife of Henry C. Bartels; she was born in Germany and came to Cape Girardeau County when she was 4 years old, living with her parents near Egypt Mills.
