The Christmas season goes up in flames, as more than 2,000 discarded Christmas trees, collected in Cape Girardeau, are burned by members of the Jaycees at Arena Park as part of the group's annual holiday-ending public service project.

On schedule, the Marquette Cement Co., closes down its kiln operation in preparation for work which will reduce dust fallout over the city; the installation of equipment on the wet process, or short stack, is expected to begin Tuesday and be completed in about two weeks without interfering with the plant's operation.

75 years ago: Jan. 7, 1937

C.A. Wynne, athletic director and head football coach at the University of Kentucky-Lexington, speaks at the annual dinner given by the Lions Club for members of the State College and Central High School football teams at May Greene School.

A municipal committee appointed to supervise the nursery schools in the Smelterville suburb reports it has been unsuccessful in locating any building to house the school for black children.

100 years ago: Jan. 7, 1912

Postmaster E.W. Flentge leaves in the evening for St. Louis; he recently received a telegram from his brother, H.C. Flentge, of San Antonio, Texas, to meet him in St. Louis Monday; the two haven't seen each other for 16 years.

The Rev. August Bueltemann of Mascoutah, Ill., preaches in the morning at the German Methodist Church.
