Local FISH food program has moved operations to larger pantry at 106 S. Sprigg; program provides food, assistance with utility payments, transportation and medication to people in need.

St. Paul Lutheran School is observing its 100th anniversary; school was opened Jan. 1, 1894, a year after church was founded; it now has 203 students and teaching staff of 10.

25 years ago: Jan. 7, 1979

Marie Schwalbe, Bible teacher, is guest speaker at First Assembly of God Church; her ministry has taken her to churches throughout country, where she conducts prayer and Bible conferences.

Heavy snow forces cancellation of worship services at several Cape Girardeau churches; pastors are concerned about safety of their older members.

50 years ago: Jan. 7, 1954

Cpl. John L. Hunter of Cape Girardeau, listed as missing in action since Dec. 2, 1950, is now presumed dead and Army has notified his mother, Mrs. Mae Hunter; also among names of Army personnel missing for more than year in Korea and presumed to be dead is Maj. Lawrence E. Loos of Jackson.

Low stages on Mississippi River won't pose threat to Cape Girardeau's water supply; however, ice accumulating around intake pipes may.

75 years ago: Jan. 7, 1929

If recommendation of state Tax Commission is followed, Cape Girardeau Teachers College will receive $448,500 from state for its support during next biennial period.

Some relief from cold wave, which early yesterday sent mercury down to new low mark for season, comes to district; but it is only temporary, for weather bureau warns that another cold snap is in making for tonight; today's high is about 20 degrees, up from 8 degrees recorded yesterday.
