25 years ago: Jan. 6, 1985

The Rev. Edwin C. Brasington, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Cape Girardeau, has been elected and installed as the first moderator of the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy; the new presbytery was formed last fall when the former presbyteries of Southeast Missouri and Elijah Parish Lovejoy united after 122 years of separation.

Austin Periodical Services has leased a building under construction at South Frederick and Good Hope streets from Mr. and Mrs. Claude A. "Nip" Kelley; the company distributes magazines, periodicals and paperback books to about 190 retail outlets in Southeast Missouri.

50 years ago: Jan. 6, 1960

While the southern counties of Southeast Missouri received snow overnight, the northern counties remained free of snowfall; several inches fell in Missouri near the Arkansas line; driving conditions were dangerous, and three people were killed south of Cape Girardeau in a series of vehicle crashes.

Monsignor Marion F. Forst, pastor of St. Mary's Cathedral and vicar general of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, is appointed bishop of the Dodge City, Kan., diocese; Forst has served as pastor of the Cape Girardeau church since June 1949.

75 years ago: Jan. 6, 1935

A service of unusual interest is held in the evening at First Christian Church, when three prominent Cape Girardeau laymen -- Dr. Walter W. Parker, L.R. Johnson and Mayor Edward L. Drum -- deliver short addresses on the topic "My Idea of God."

Alfred Hirsch has been elected commander of Missouri's Golden Troopers, the American Legion drum and bugle corps.

100 years ago: Jan. 6, 1910

John Stike, the popular saloon man of New Hamburg, Mo., lost his tavern, stock and fixtures, as well as the contents of his dwelling, to a conflagration recently; but he has announced he will replace his burned building with a fine brick structure.

Streetcars have been having a hard time since the snow came last night; one car, with a young lady and two escorts, making a trip from the train depot to the Normal School dormitory is more than an hour getting out of Broadway.
