Calling it a "no win situation," a majority of the Cape Girardeau City Council concurred yesterday it would be futile to take any steps to block the opening of a birth-control clinic offering abortion services here; Life-Boat Crusaders, a group opposing the clinic, hopes to persuade the council to enact restrictive regulations that would prevent the clinic from opening.

U.S. Rep. Wendell Bailey's decision not to seek re-election this year in the new 8th Congressional District apparently increases the probability that his Republican colleague, Rep. Bill Emerson of De Soto, Mo., will make the race in the district.

50 years ago: Jan. 6, 1957

The Rev. Merton Schaefer of St. Louis, director of missions of the Western District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, outlines procedures for the formation of new congregations at an open house at Trinity Lutheran Church; Trinity is gathering information for the formation of a proposed 'daughter' congregation.

The golden Troopers will hold election of officers this week; the next drum major elected will have the privilege of leading the drum and bugle corps through its 30th year of service to Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: Jan. 6, 1932

Thieves broke into the Gately Store, 313 Broadway in Cape Girardeau, last night and carried away gold watches and rings valued at more than $1,000.

Simultaneous with the resumption of a part of its big construction program, the Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. plant in South Cape Girardeau during the past three weeks has added 100 men to its normal work force.

100 years ago: Jan. 6, 1907

The Rev. E.T. Adams preaches a special sermon to the young people of the Methodist Church of Cape Girardeau in observance of Decision Day; the subject of his sermon is "Christ in Social Life."

The Rev. O.J. Gilbert of the Evangelical Church goes out to the Salem church in the morning and installs the new pastor, the Rev. Schultz, who came about a month ago; F.H. Lampe, who lives near the Salem church, brings him back to Cape Girardeau in the evening and then spends the night at a family reunion at his father's home on South Ellis Street.
