1988

Central Hardware will open one of its larger operations in Cape Girardeau this year; the St. Louis-based business, which has 37 other stores spread over six states, will occupy 90,000 square feet in the C-4 Corporation's Cape Center development project.

Glen Kinder Sr., a retired building developer and employee of the former Missouri Utilities Co., has filed for a seat on the Cape Girardeau City Council.

1963

Construction of a new federal building in Cape Girardeau, to house not only the post office but also the many federal offices located here, is again being considered in Washington, D.C.; once thought a dead issue, the plan has been revived and is being studied on the legislative as well as on the agency level.

Westminster Presbyterian Church will be formally organized and constituted at a worship service tomorrow afternoon at the manse, 1619 Oak Hills Dr.; Westminster began to hold services Oct. 14; the Rev. Tom Bass is the pastor in charge of the new congregation.

1938

Southeast Missouri's really big tree -- believed to be the state's largest -- has all but escaped attention, its size being overshadowed by the publicity attending the big oak down in Mississippi County; road conditions make it all but impossible to reach the biggest tree, a cypress on the Luther Felker farm northwest of Vanduser, Mo.

The Jackson Board of Education decides to close the grade school temporarily; influenza, measles and chickenpox have taken a toll of 121 pupils from the school.

1913

The Rev. W.E. Hays, presiding elder of the Charleston, Mo., district, preaches at the morning worship service at Centenary Methodist Church; this is his first visit to Centenary Church as the new presiding elder.

The Rev. W.A. Haynes begins his work as pastor of the Christian Church here; the topic of his evening sermon is "The Greatest Sin of the Age."
