Navigation on Mississippi River is proceeding with caution as stage of stream continues to drop because of long drought; at St. Louis river stands at minus 2.2 feet; at Cape Girardeau, stage is 6.8 feet.

Proposed municipal budget of $390,000 for fiscal 1953-54 is submitted to city council by Mayor Manning P. Greer; figure represents increase of $30,000 over 1952-53 budget.

75 years ago: Jan. 4, 1929

Nineteen new pianos are being installed at Teachers College, to be used in various music departments of school; pianos are Vose instruments and were shipped here from factory in Boston.

Total of 1,670 acres of land near Torch in Ripley County has been purchased by M.E. Leming Jr. of Cape Girardeau from Poplar Bluff interests; 350 acres of land are in cultivation, and remainder consists of unimproved land from which timber has been cut by lumber company.
