25 years ago: Jan. 30, 1985

BENTON, Mo. -- After several months of remodeling the former Nickerson Farms Restaurant here, the Moore-Dupont Winery along Interstate 55 at the Benton exit is set to open its tasting room, gift shop and delicatessen this week.

BENTON, Mo. -- more than 80 people from eight counties, including city and county officials, chamber of commerce representatives, industrial development experts and area businessmen, attend a meeting here to discuss ways to lure General Motors' new multi-billion-dollar Saturn car plant to the region; Louis Hirschowitz, head of the Scott County Board of Commissioners, organized the gathering.

50 years ago: Jan. 30, 1960

The school being built north of Cape Girardeau will be named for long-time rural teacher Nell Holcomb; Holcomb served various schools for some 44 years, her first charge being Coker School; others have been Juden School, Egypt Mills School, Randles School and the new elementary school at Jackson; this year, she is doing substitute teaching at May Greene School in Cape Girardeau.

A new bank facility to serve west end customers of the Farmers & Merchants Bank will be constructed by Gerhardt Construction Co., it is announced; the facility will provide drive-in and walk-up accommodations for customers, and will be located on South West End Boulevard, across from the Sunny Hill Dairy Bar.

75 years ago: Jan. 30, 1935

Eighty-eight Girardeans sign a telegram extending birthday greetings to President F.D. Roosevelt, and pay 25 cents each, which is to be used for relief work and for extension of the Warm Springs, Ga., foundation for the elimination of infantile paralysis; similar lists are being made up throughout the country, with Western Union delivering the messages without charge; Roosevelt spends his 53rd birthday at the White House.

Work has been started on the remodeling of the one-story, seven-room residence of Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Bartels, 227 N. Middle St., which was badly damaged by fire Dec. 11; it will be converted into four modern efficiency apartments.

100 years ago: Jan. 30, 1910

Dies, George W. Bahn, another of the pioneers who came to Cape Girardeau County from Germany in the 1850s; Bahn was born in 1842 in Bemhausen, Germany, and came to Cape Girardeau in 1858; during the Civil War, Bahn was a gunsmith in the United States arsenal in St. Louis; immediately after the war, he returned to Cape Girardeau, where he and his brothers have conducted a hardware business.

W.M. Wilson and family, who have been residents of Cape Girardeau County all their lives, living near Allenville, have left for Dallas, Texas, where they will make their home.
