1988

After 53 years as a priest, the past 20 years serving St. Mary's Cathedral in Cape Girardeau, Monsignor Joseph Huels is retiring. He will become senior priest in residence at St. Mary's, which means he will continue to live in Cape Girardeau and help out where he can.

The National Weather Service says January is shaping up to be anything but mild in the Cape Girardeau area; a low of 17 degrees yesterday morning was the coldest reading so far this winter, but the weather service predicts even colder temperatures headed this way by mid-week.

1963

Reorganization plans of the Pentagon for the Army Reserves will result in the deactivation of the reserve unit in Cape Girardeau and at Sikeston, Mo., Marston, Mo., and Poplar Bluff, Mo.; no one seems to know when the deactivation will take place.

The Kennedy administration will have to show it will slash expenditures to match its proposed tax cut if it wants his support on the measure, says 10th District Democrat Paul C. Jones of Kennett, Mo., as he prepares to depart for Washington.

1938

The first baby born in Cape Girardeau in 1938 is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Oehl of Perryville, Mo.; the baby, weighing 6 pounds, 3 ounces, was born last night at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

R.K. Wilson says he has tendered his resignation as acting postmaster at Jackson, a position he has held since July 1937; Wilson has tried for several months to get some action on a new postmaster, without success; he finally climaxed his efforts by sending in his resignation.

1913

Capt. Henry A. Astholz, secretary of the Cape Girardeau Building & Loan Association since its organization 30 years ago, has given his resignation to the board, effective Jan. 24; although by no means an old man, Astholz believes he has earned a rest.

Mrs. Sam Wallace and children of Jackson are on their way to Memphis, where she will join her husband who is working in that city.
