The proposed widening of the Kingshighway and Independence Street intersection is expected to get the green light from the Cape Girardeau City Council on Monday; plans call for the approximately $230,000 project to be done this upcoming construction season by the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department, with the city providing the majority of the funding.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee Mayor Robert Capshaw announces he will appoint retired Chaffee businessman Paul Pfefferkorn to complete the remaining three-month, unexpired term of his brother, E. Mike Pfefferkorn, who died last month.

50 years ago: Jan. 3, 1962

Gov. John M. Dalton, returning home to Southeast Missouri for a series of speeches and conferences, tells he Southeast Missourian that there have been discussions about a possible second state capital improvements bond issue.

Representatives of Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, a St. Louis architectural firm, makes contact with Cape Girardeau officials in preparation for a survey of possible public fallout shelter locations; the company will inspect public and private buildings, which may be adaptable as shelters for at least 50 people.

75 years ago: Jan. 3, 1937

Four men were recently ordained deacons of the First Baptist Church at Jackson; two are twin brothers, Joe and Eugene McDonald, who are seniors at Cape State College and star basketball players; the others ordained were James N. Vickery and John W. Davis.

Cape Girardeau voters will go to the polls for a special election Tuesday on a proposal to issue $55,000 in bonds to purchase and develop a 50-acre tract west of the city as a recreational center and fairgrounds.

100 years ago: Jan. 3, 1912

The recently completed independent audit report of county offices was opened to the public by the county court yesterday; it shows that the books of the county treasurer fail to balance to the extent of about $1,700; the books of the county clerk also are reported irregular to the extent of several hundred dollars.

J.A. Vogel, the Broadway livery man, has sold his business to Judge Ben Miller, who takes charge in the morning.
