Desire to follow in his father's footsteps and become Naval officer prompted Clayton P. Hahs to apply to Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.; he received confirmation of appointment to academy earlier this month; Hahs is son of David and Candy Hahs; David Hahs served 22 years in Naval Reserve.

Judy Langford Carter, daughter-in-law of President Jimmy Carter, will visit Cape Girardeau Tuesday as part of three-day trip through Missouri on behalf of Equal Rights Amendment; she will be guest of honor at reception in River Room of Ramada Inn, sponsored by Missouri ERA Coalition and Cape County Democratic Central Committee.
Cape Girardeau's first city primary ever to be conducted in February will be carried out week from Tuesday, with most political observers pessimistic about large voter turnout; four people are on ballot for city council, which will be narrowed to two, and those two finalists will face each other in April city election to fill single seat.
50 years ago: Jan. 29, 1953
Defective wheel causes derailment of 16 cars of southbound Frisco freight train shortly after midnight near Cape Rock, just north of city limits; damage to tracks and equipment is estimated at $25,000; 300-foot stretch of both main line and siding was ripped up by runaway cars, which were in middle of track; cars piled up in zig-zag pattern.
Missouri Utilities Co. announces resignation of Leonard A. Byron as executive vice president of company and appointment of Ray W. Call, superintendent of power, to executive position, effective on Byron's departure March 1.
75 years ago: Jan. 29, 1928
The Rev. Elbert Owens, pastor of First Christian Church at Charleston, preaches at morning and evening services at First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau; Owens recently went to Charleston and for number of years has been pastor of churches in this district.
Fire, believed to have originated from sparks from flue, destroys St. Edward's Catholic Church at Dutchtown shortly after noon, with loss estimated in excess of $5,000; only few chairs and table are saved from building; church was of frame construction and was one of oldest in that section of Cape Girardeau County.
