DEXTER, Mo. -- Volatile gasoline spilling from a storage tank endangers an entire section of Dexter in the morning; the gasoline begins spilling from the tank when it is struck by a derailed Missouri Pacific freight car; firefighters struggle for five hours to dilute the gasoline with water, stemming the possibility that a spark might ignite the whole west end of town.

Members of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department are seeking an increase in their salary schedule to bring it to the same level as the police department's; firemen now earn an average of $20 per month less than policemen.

1939

A review of the new fairground park project shows it is set for an early completion; all material for completion of the arena is on the ground, and the first consignment of shrubbery for landscaping has been arranged for; there is still $17,000 in the special park fund to be spent on this project.

The County Court yesterday waived the collection of a $5 a day license fee from the walkathon amusement place on South Main Street in Cape Girardeau, with the understanding that it will pay a minimum of $50 a week to the Cape County Welfare Association.

Walter Schlueter took the honors at last night's annual declamatory contest at the Normal School with his presentation titled "The American Coal Mine;" Schlueter will next represent the Cape Normal at the inter-Normal contest to be held at Springfield, Mo.

It is rumored that a new union railroad depot will be built on the south side of the tracks, about half way between Illmo and Fornfelt.
