SEDGEWICKVILLE, Mo. -- The Sedgewickville Baptist Mission holds a dedication service for its new mobile chapel in the afternoon; the dedication sermon is preached by the Rev. G.D. Parrack, superintendent of missions for the Cape Girardeau Baptist Association.

Gene Penzel, vice president of Penzel Construction Co. of Jackson, has been elected president of the Associated General Contractors of Missouri for 1980.

50 years ago: Jan. 27, 1955

Leon McLaughlin, elected commissioner yesterday in special balloting, is formally inducted into office and the council is reorganized; the following assignments are made: McLaughlin, superintendent of the police department; Mayor Narvol A. Randol, public affairs; U.G. Pettigrew, fire, health and cemeteries; Louis Brune, public works, and J.W. McBride, parks, public property, accounts and finance.

Frigid temperatures swept into Cape Girardeau overnight, the mercury falling to 5 degrees above zero.

75 years ago: Jan. 27, 1930

Paul Sharp, 11 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sharp of Fornfelt, dies in St. Francis Hospital of injuries sustained in a coasting accident near his home two days ago; the boy sustained internal injuries which developed into peritonitis.

A building that residents of Illmo, Fornfelt and other communities donated funds to build for the Menzies Shoe Co., will be turned over to the Ely Walker Dry Goods Co., for use in operating a garment-making plant.

100 years ago: Jan. 27, 1905

The first week's work of the new Jefferson School is completed and, as far as the corps of teachers is able to control the situation, good work was accomplished; a large number of pupils appeared at the school Monday, having left the Normal School elementary department and parochial schools to begin work at the new building.

Henry Kieninger of Pocahontas came to Jackson Monday to get a metallic coffin for Mrs. Joseph Cotner, who died the day before; she was buried at Apple Creek.
