Expiration of terms of two Republican members of bipartisan Board of Regents at Southeast Missouri State University has stirred spirited contest for posts; terms of Martin Hecht, Cape Girardeau retail merchant, and Dr. William L. Tomlinson, St. Louis surgeon, ended as of Jan. 1, although they continue in office until successors are named; Gov. Joseph P. Teasdale, a Democrat, could rename both men board, but political observers say it's highly unlikely.
More moderate temperatures of past four days, which helped melt snow and ice in streets and brought relief for overburdened furnaces, was only brief respite from this winter's frigid weather; another cold front crossed into northern Midwest yesterday and is inching its way toward this region, bringing with it possibility of more snow.

The Rev. C.E. Fleshman, pastor of Church of the Nazarene, has been called to serve local congregation for another three years; Fleshman is completing his 12th year with Cape Girardeau church.
Cairo, Ill. - Three fiery crosses are burned at different points at Cairo, although police find them only after they burn out; traditionally, crosses have been burned by anti-black elements as warnings; tomorrow is date agreed upon by Cairo city schools and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for admission of black pupils to schools hitherto attended only by white children.
75 years ago: Jan. 27, 1927
Ruby Lindsay, young school girl living near Cape Girardeau, who nearly three years ago saved life of her teacher, when both were trapped on railway trestle north of town, will be given Carnegie silver medal for her bravery; Lindsay will be honored for saving life of Mrs. Marjorie Hobbs on April 19, 1924, when she was just 15 years old.
Dr. Ellis Fischell, noted cancer specialist of St. Louis, speaks to Optimist Club at its noon luncheon; he discusses steps being taken to educate nation on importance of early treatment and control of cancer.
