Men of the Brotherhood at First Baptist Church preside at services in observance of Baptist Men's Day; guest speaker at the morning worship hour is Warren Black, who discusses "The Ingredients of Freedom"; for the past three years he has served as state supervisor of public schools in Southeast Missouri.

Rodney Ladreiter received the Distinguished Service Award last night at the annual Jackson Jaycees' Bosses' Night Banquet; also at the banquet, Leemon E. Gerecke of near Gordonville was named "Outstanding Young Farmer" of the year.

1939

Thirty-two youths from 13 Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois towns come to Cape Girardeau to undergo physical examinations as an entrance requirement to joining the Navy; those from Cape Girardeau County are M. Crites, Charles Henley, Lorenz Gerecke, Joseph Burger, John Wissman, Marvin and Austin Feldon, Howard and Elbert Schumer, John Wulfers and P. Statler.

Fire destroys a large barn and some livestock on the Sam Garner farm on Bend Road, a mile north of Cape Girardeau; Mr. and Mrs. M.M. McCray live on the farm; the estimated loss is from $2,000 to $2,500.

1914

Another big factory for Cape Girardeau is assured, the Freeze Threshing Machine Co. having decided to begin at once the construction of a large manufacturing plant here; the main building will be about 150 feet by 500 feet, to which wings will be added.

J. Harry McPherson of Paragould, Ark., closes a deal for the purchase of the Herman Buck steam laundry.
