1988

Ed McElfresh, who has more than 18 years of experience working with chimneys and chimney cleaning, has opened Cape Chimney Sweeps; the firm handles everything from chimney caps to fireplace accessories.

The $400,000 "Caring for the Future" capital campaign at Southeast Missouri State University recently received a major boost with the gift of $50,000 from BioKyowa Inc.; the funds will be used for the Biokyowa Nursing Skills Laboratory.

1963

Firemen worked in snow and freezing weather as they battled flames shooting from the belfry of Trinity Lutheran Church last night; strong winds added suspense to the ordeal, but worked to firefighters' advantage, as it pushed the flames out of the 92-foot church tower and against a brick wall.

Plunging temperatures and raging winds, with gusts up to 41 miles per hour, piled snow in deep drifts and left Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri locked in a frozen white landscape; at the municipal airport, the temperature falls to 6 below zero in the morning.

1938

M.E. Cox, the new director of the Centenary Methodist Church choir, is in charge for the first time at regular worship services; Mrs. Leo Rasche is the organist; Mr. and Mrs. J. Clyde Brandt, who had been director and organist at Centenary for 17 years, resigned in October.

The Rev. J. Wilson Crichlow, presiding elder of the Cape Girardeau district of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, preaches in the morning at New McKendree Methodist Church in Jackson and in the evening at McLain's Chapel, north of Cape Girardeau.

1913

A serious wreck, caused by a broken rail, occurred yesterday afternoon on the Jackson branch of the Iron Mountain Railroad, about seven miles south of Jackson; the passenger coach and one baggage car left the track and slowly turned turtle; only about a dozen people were in the coach and none was seriously hurt.

A commercial club has been organized down in the little town of Fornfelt; about 70 businessmen have enrolled in the club for the work of boosting the town and community.
