A move underway in Congress to end the federal revenue sharing program, on which the city of Cape Girardeau depends to help fund trash collection and disposal, could force city officials to consider charging for residential trash collection.

Dennis Marchi, who has been with the Schnuck's chain of supermarkets for 16 years, has been named the new manager of the Cape Girardeau Schnuck's store.

50 years ago: Jan. 23, 1960

Becoming the third incumbent and fourth candidate to file, City Commissioner John L. Wieser returned his petition late yesterday to the city clerk, seeking nomination at the city primary on March 22; he filed for the post of commissioner.

The building at 623 Good Hope St., occupied by Farmer's Cafe until it ceased business two weeks ago, will house a jewelry store and watch repair shop operated by Luke McCormick; Farmer's cafe was established in August 1934 by Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Farmer, who over the years were assisted by their daughters, Mrs. Clayton Davis and Mrs. S.A. Geringer.

75 years ago: Jan. 23, 1935

A shipment of 7,200 cans of condensed soup, which had been canned in Cape Girardeau at the Federal Emergency Relief Administration cannery, has been sent to Sikeston, Mo., for distribution in this district; in addition, 1,000 cases of stew meat from the large supply stored in buildings on Water Street were shipped to Sikeston recently.

Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Bartels have purchased a lot in the 500 block of North Pacific Street and plan to build a dwelling there later in the year; the lot, on the east side of the street just across from State College campus, was bought from the R.B. Oliver estate.

100 years ago: Jan. 23, 1910

The first annual meeting of the Scott County School Principals' Association will meet at Sikeston, Mo., on Jan. 29; it is the outcome of the movement inaugurated by Supt. B. Hugh Smith to effect a better organization of teachers and schools of the county; schools making up the association are Sikeston, Edna, Chaffee, Oran, Illmo, Benton, Vanduser and Blodgett.

Fred Naeter returns in the evening from attending a meeting of the Missouri Press Association at Jefferson City.
