25 years ago: Jan. 23, 1983

The Rev. Douglas Clem, who was pastor of First Church of the Nazarene in Cape Girardeau for five years, has resigned and moved to Port Orchard, Wash., where he will serve a Nazarene church; the church has employed another pastor, the Rev. Chester L. Kneir of Malden, Mo.

Three Jackson aldermen -- Leonard A. Dambach, Daisy Long and Sharon Brammer -- filed last week for re-election; they joined Deloris "Dee" Uren, who filed for re-election to a fourth term as city collector.

50 years ago: Jan. 23, 1958

Tentative plans have been made for construction of sidewalks on the east side of Minnesota Street, south of Bloomfield Street and to new Jefferson School; the Cape Special Road District has agreed to help with excavation work, and property owners will install the walks.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The Burton J. Gerhardt Construction Corp. of Cape Girardeau is remodeling the tornado-damaged Building & Loan Building at Main and Yoakum streets; the second story of the structure will be dismantled, and it will be converted into a one-story building.

75 years ago: Jan. 23, 1933

High water is subsiding following a rain Saturday night which sent streams in Cape Girardeau County out of their banks; rainfall in Cape Girardeau Saturday totaled 1.24 inches, while at Jackson the rain measured 2.28 inches.

Denver M. Wright is back at his home at Brentwood, Mo., insisting he has finished with Missouri big-game hunting; his latest lion hunt on an island near East Prairie, Mo., in the Mississippi River, ended Saturday with Wright, his 14-year-old son Charles, and others shooting the meek, circus-bred animals.

100 years ago: Jan. 23, 1908

At a meeting of the fair directors, D.A. Glenn was reelected president, E.H. Engelmann secretary, H.A. Astholz treasurer, and F.A. Kage superintendent; Joel Nunn and L.F. Klostermann were balloted on for vice president, and Nunn was elected.

The revival services at Second Baptist Church are progressing with great interest; last night, a crowd of at least 500 heard the Rev. S.W. Beasley preach on "Wheels Within Wheels"; Beasley is one of the greatest evangelists produced in Kentucky.
