City of Cape Girardeau and Chamber of Commerce officials estimate cost of last week's snowstorm to taxpayers and economic impact resulting from time lost at work to be in excess of $10 million; City Manager W.G. Lawley says $60,000 was spent by city for battling near-record snow; economic impact of storm has been felt in plant closings, high absenteeism as result of people from rural areas being unable to get into town, and closed retail stores.
U.S. District Judge H. Kenneth Wangelin will be sponsor of Southeast Missouri Boy Scout Council's 1977 Eagle Scout class, which he will address at annual Court of Honor in Cape Girardeau Feb. 26; about 30 boys who attained Scouting's highest rank last year will make up class.

75 years ago: Jan. 23, 1928
Chaffee -- Body of Charles Edwards, 70, retired engineer for Frisco Railroad, is found at 4:30 a.m. at foot of stairway in his home, after firemen break in locked front door and battle half-hour with flames which partially destroy two-story dwelling; it is believed Edwards suffocated and fell part of way down stairs as he sought to escape fire.
Hearing of evidence on application of Missouri Pacific Railroad for certificate of convenience and necessity for extension of its lines from Thebes bridge to Cape Girardeau opens in Common Pleas courtroom before Thomas J. Brown, chairman of Missouri Public Service Commission, who sits as special commissioner for state board and for Interstate Commerce Commission.
