50 years ago: Jan. 22, 1960

JEFFERSON CITY -- Cape Girardeau business men, supporting the move to transfer the Bank of Gordonville to their city, testify before the State Banking Board that another bank is needed to meet the financial requirements of the growing city; testifying are Joseph Quatmann, Charles Harris and Lory Stahly.

Jacksonians will have the opportunity to see some real boxing tomorrow night, at ring side in the lower part of the American Legion hall, where Jackson boys have been training for some time; 12 boxers from Sikeston, Mo., and eight from St. Louis will take on boxers from Jackson; the matches are sponsored by the Golden Gloves Association.

75 years ago: Jan. 22, 1935

The resignation of George D. French as chief of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department was accepted yesterday by the city council; immediately following, fireman Harry Rabe was elevated to the position of chief and Robert J. Kammer was named assistant chief; Vincent Unnerstall was appointed as a fireman.

Getting a firmer grip on Cape Girardeau and the district, the severe cold wave sends the mercury tumbling to a new season low of 6 degrees above zero.

100 years ago: Jan. 22, 1910

If you had trouble getting answers on the telephone last night about dusk, it's likely the party you wanted was outside watching for the comet that appeared low in the sky to the southwest of Cape Girardeau; many spectators viewed it from the Normal hill.

T.F. Graham of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, representing the Redpath Chautauqua system, is in Cape Girardeau in the morning to gauge interest in starting a Chautauqua here.
