David R. Stewart, the manager of a private security guard service, becomes the fourth Democrat to file for Cape Girardeau County sheriff, while First District County Court Judge Leonard F. Sander, a Republican, files for another term.

Southeast Missouri State University is requesting an emergency appropriation of $214,205 for "selective rebuilding" of the rotor and diaphragms of a 7,500-kilowatt turbine generator in the campus power plant; Dr. Bill Stacy, interim president, has notified Gov. Joseph Teasdale of the request.

50 years ago: Jan. 22, 1955

The residence on Cape Rock Drive being remodeled by Dr. C.M. Wildman of Perryville, Mo., was destroyed by fire Thursday night; the loss was estimated at about $20,000 and only about half was covered by insurance; the house is the former Earl E. Todd residence.

Robert E. Coughenour of St. Louis, district governor of the Kiwanis Club's Mo-Ark district, was the guest speaker at a dinner meeting of the Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club last night; the program noted the 40th anniversary of Kiwanis International.

Negotiations have been virtually completed for the merger of the Sturdivant Bank with the Bank of Southeast Missouri through the purchase by the Sturdivant of the other banking institution.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Will Mayfield College, the only Baptist denominational school in Southeast Missouri, closes temporarily, but will reopen May 27; failure to secure adequate financial backing from the Baptists of Southeast Missouri and other friends of the school when a call to raise $4,000 for payment of pressing indebtedness was made results in the closing of the institution.

100 years ago: Jan. 22, 1905

Cape Girardeau's first big YMCA day is held; YMCA state secretaries occupy the pulpits of the English Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian churches, where they describe their organization's work in detail.

In the General Assembly last week, Rep. Fred Kies of Jackson offered a joint and concurrent resolution to submit a constitutional amendment to a vote of the people providing for the levy of a tax for the support of public libraries.
