The 400 and 500 blocks of Good Hope Street should look brighter within next two weeks; Union Electric plans to replace existing lights in two-block area with brighter, high-pressure sodium lights; new lights, requested by Haarig Area Development Association and installed at no charge, will raise lighting to the level of the 600 block of Good Hope.

Benton - Thomas Kelly School officials will ask voters to approve $1.2 million bond issue in April for construction of five classrooms, addition of new elementary library and expansion of high school gymnasium; if measure is approve by voters, district plans no increase in tax levy; instead, bonds will be paid by extending district's current debt-service payment through 2012.

25 years ago: Jan. 22, 1978

County highway crews were busy yesterday freeing last snowbound communities in Old Appleton, Friedheim and New Wells areas, while state highway crews were giving once-over to several farm-to-market routes; throughout county, show drifts six to seven feet high hampered highway crews during week.

Congregational assembly of Trinity Lutheran Church agrees to hold all services in gymnasium of Trinity Lutheran School indefinitely, and committee is formed to study future of church; 99-year-old church at Frederick and Themis was recently declared unsafe for continued use.

50 years ago: Jan. 22, 1953

Sanitary code for Cape Girardeau restaurants, together with regular inspections, is urged by County Sanitarian Marvin Campbell and Webster Scott of State Bureau of Food and Drugs, in talks before Cape Girardeau Council of Women's Clubs; council, representing 11 women's clubs, goes on record as tentatively favoring restaurant inspection, but votes to study question further.

Construction will begin soon, weather permitting, on new service station on southwest corner of Independence Street and Minnesota Avenue, says Harley M. Lemmon, owner of property; station will handle Texaco products.

75 years ago: Jan. 22, 1928

Second Baptist congregation in South Cape Girardeau has made plans to remodel its church building at corner of Frederick and Jefferson, it is announced by the Rev. I.T. Mack, pastor; at recent meeting of church members, $2,000 in pledges were secured; pastor hopes to raise amount among congregation to $3,300 and secure about $1,700 from outside solicitation.

Dr. J.B. Trotter, pastor of Fifth Street Baptist Church of Hannibal, is selected by unanimous vote of church membership of First Baptist Church to become pastor; Trotter preached at morning and evening services at church Jan. 15 and made very favorable impression on congregation.
