There were numerous local winners in the Missouri Lottery's Jackpot 86 game yesterday, the first day of lottery ticket sales, not the least of which were merchants who sold the tickets; initial estimates indicate that somewhere between 30,000 and 40,000 lottery tickets were bought Monday in Cape Girardeau and the immediate area.

Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce officials are studying the possibility of establishing an areawide chamber that would promote the region and encourage industrial growth; the organization would involve Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Scott City and Chaffee, Mo.

50 years ago: Jan. 21, 1961

While only five building permits were issued this week by the city engineer, their total value rose to $65,300 due to plans for an eight-unit apartment building to be constructed at 509 Bellevue St.; estimated cost is $40,000.

After dropping behind by 18 points early in the second period, the Notre Dame High Bulldogs stage a strong rally and down the visiting Cape Central High Tigers 76-59; the win puts the Bulldogs, who previously beat the College High Preps, in the driver's seat for the city basketball championship.

75 years ago: Jan. 21, 1936

Three men and a small boy escaped uninjured in the South Sprigg Street Garage in the Smelterville suburb last evening when an acetylene generator tank exploded; equipment in the garage, of which S.F. Stansil is proprietor, was damaged to the extent of about $65.

Provision for the construction of a new Highland Drive Avenue in the Rockwood Park addition west of the state college campus has been made by the city council; the old location was abandoned where the street wasn't already constructed.

100 years ago: Jan. 21, 1911

COMMERCE, Mo. -- The press mill of the Miami Powder mills at Fayville, Ill., just across from this place, explodes in the morning, demolishing the building and instantly killing three workers; dead are Hiram Pettit, Phil Malone and Walter Burns.

Lafe Caruthers is back from Jefferson City, where he had been to help make arrangements for the state to go dry.
