A proposal to relocate the fire substation at 1632 Independence to a site west of Cape LaCroix Creek has been sent to the city administration by Cape Girardeau Fire Chief Charles Mills; the relocation would eliminate a problem of fire equipment and firefighters being cut off from the west end of town when flash floods occur.

The county government isn't in the business of financing historic preservation, says County Court Associate Judge Leonard F. Sander; while the Cape Girardeau and Perry county courts have agreed to pay the cost of salvaging the Old Appleton Bridge from Apple Creek, Sander states that restoration of the bridge is the responsibility of interested residents.

50 years ago: Jan. 20, 1958

Some varmint crept into the poultry house at the Martin Krieger farm near Fornfelt last night and killed 155 chickens; the pullets were in a flock of 500 Krieger was raising for laying purposes, since he sells eggs to a hatchery.

The Cape Girardeau City Council agrees to request the State Highway Department to construct passing lanes at three major street intersections with Highway 61 to facilitate traffic movement; lanes would be constructed at the William, Independence and Broadway intersections.

75 years ago: Jan. 20, 1933

Roy Cain of Cape Girardeau has sold his interest in the Diamond Oil Co. station on North Sprigg Street to Robert Rafferty and has gone into partnership with Lawrence Kropf in the Standard Oil Co. filling station at 36 N. Sprigg St.

Morris Gaines, forward for the Central High Tigers, is the leading scorer on the basketball squad with 25 points, although he hasn't played in all six games; Walter Metje and Carl Meyer, the former a forward and the latter a guard and center, are tied for second-place honors with 17 points each.

100 years ago: Jan. 20, 1908

A report is circulating in Cape Girardeau that the St. Louis, Memphis & Southeastern division of the Frisco Railroad is to be placed in the hands of a receiver; the report has it that either Newman Erb or E.F. Blomeyer will be made receiver.

E.W. Flentge has been given another four-year extension on his appointment as postmaster of Cape Girardeau.
