The Roman Catholic and Episcopal church parishes of Cape Girardeau and their respective bishops will join in an evening service at St. Mary's Cathedral Thursday, celebrating the 1986 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity; the Rev. Joseph J. Leibrecht, Catholic bishop of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau diocese, and the Rev. William Jones, Episcopal bishop of Missouri, will both give brief meditations.

First Federal Savings and Loan of Southeast Missouri plans to build a new full-service branch at the corner of Route K and Silver Springs Road.

50 years ago: Jan. 19, 1961

Wedekind Park, the roadside parklet adjacent to the planned interchange of U.S. 61 and Interstate 55 northwest of Cape Girardeau, will be undisturbed by the construction program; there had been some concern the small wooded area would be eliminated as a part of the huge interchange nearby.

Elmo C. Martin, immediate past representative from Cape Girardeau County to the General Assembly, has been endorsed for the Jackson postmaster position by the Cape County Democratic Committee.

75 years ago: Jan. 19, 1936

Announcement of a gift of a 240-acre tract of land on St. Francis River in Wayne County by Mr. and Mrs. T. Albert Ward of Greenville and Supt. Fred Lewallen of the public schools of Chaffee, Mo., to the Southeast Missouri Area Council of Boy Scouts to be used as a permanent campsite, is made at the council's annual business meeting here; the name "Camp Lewallen" is promptly adopted by the council.

Dr. Toyohiko Kagawa, the world-renowned Japanese Christian leader, is discussed during the morning worship service at First Christian Church by the pastor, the Rev. Ira D. Crewdson.

100 years ago: Jan. 19, 1911

A crowd of about 30 or 40 men gathered at the Sons of Veterans hall last night to listen to William C.F. Lenz, state organizer for the German-American Alliance; at the conclusion of his address, a local branch was organized with about 25 members; Otto Grueneberg was selected president.

At a recent meeting of members of First Baptist Church, the matter of building a new church was discussed; it is likely that work on the new edifice at the corner of Themis and Ellis streets will begin in the spring.
